Nuthatch Cottage, Llanwrtyd Wells

Glamorgan. Sleeps up to 2

The Nuthatch Cottage sleeps two people in comfort. A Bird Lovers and Garden Lovers Paradise.

This romantic little cottage is set in a truly wonderful and remote location tucked next door to the owners house with miles of uninterrupted walking from the door in The Abergwesyn Valley. Perfect for star gazers with no light pollution.

Above the cottage is a lovely upper garden with the most stunning views down the river valley and then there are the enclosed gardens in the front of the farmhouse,with an oak framed summer house- now part of The National Garden Scheme (NGS);

This pretty little cottage is reached either over a new bridge or through the ford; this picturesque stream where both trout and salmon spawn. The upper garden has water, bog and winter gardens with all types of unusual and lovely plants and trees. The main garden has a spring garden with witch hazels, primroses, snowdrops, hellebores and later meconopsis poppies and primulas. There is a beautiful walk way through the centre of the garden with many different species of roses and clematis to a pretty wooden summer house where the owner keeps his cricket memorabilia; this is where we were served a wonderful "cricket tea". There are raised vegetable and flower beds with a wonderful mix of all sorts of flowers, vegetables, fruit trees and bushes where visitors are welcome to walk, wonder and talk to the very industrious owners who also keep free range chickens.

Bird News

Do take a look at the photographs recently added to the website of the eagerly awaited return of some of the many migrant birds, especially those the welsh oak woods are so famed for, pied flycatcher, redstart, wood and willow warbler, chiff chaff. tree pipit and the iconic cuckoo.

At Nuthatch Cottage, April is a real highlight month when they normally return. Then in May and June it is nesting time. This year there are 28 nesting boxes up in the garden, around the house and in the adjoining oak wood.

Last year there were pied flycatchers, redstarts, great tits, blye tits and pied wagtails nesting. The owner monitors them and sends the results off to the British Trust for Ornithology.

I would thoroughly recommend this as a perfect place to stay for bird lovers.

Cottage acommodation

The Nuthatch is entered via a private entrance into a small orangery, the kitchen is contemporary with an electric cooker microwave and grill; a fridge and (a separate freezer next door in a shared utility room), a washing machine, a dining table and chairs .The lounge has two new and very comfortable arm chairs, an electric coal effect effect fire, a wooden settle and a flat screen TV with the full sky package. The walls of this cottage dating from the 1600's are very thick and hanging in front of the window is a bird feeder - where there are numerous different species of birds completely unafraid of humans . So with Dinas RSPB Bird Reserve just up the Abergwesyn Valley a bird lovers' paradise. Near the property was one of the last nesting sites of red kite, before their wonderful recovery to becoming a common sight these days.

The orangery has two wicker chairs.

A wonderful place for walkers with numerous walkers all around

For anyone interested in beautiful gardens and horticulture this is the place to visit; there is so much to write-about I cannot take the space! The owners say "When we go on holiday it is difficult to find anywhere as nice as home" and I would agree!
The cottage is perfect for visitors who would like complete peace and quiet - the owners are very unobtrusive; the cottage is all on one level so good for anyone with walking difficulties but not big enough for a wheel chair.

The cottage is only 2 miles from Beulah with a village pub, shop and garage and down the picturesque and little known Abergwesyn Valley with its hanging oak woods, rushing rivers and forests. There are mountain bike trails just up the lane and numerous scenic drives for visitors. A wonderful place for walkers with numerous walks all around - the owner would be very helpful on knowing the local walks and it is only seven miles (hard) walking over the mountain to The Elan Valley - where by road it would take much longer. A real secret hide-away -the house has had many famous visitors and has been a location for BBC play four today.
