Struan Cottage is a detached, traditional crofter’s cottage, which has been extended to form deceptively spacious accommodation. It makes a great holiday base to get away from the pressures of everyday living and is situated in Ness, which is a widespread district in the northern part of Lewis. The famous Butt of Lewis, with its majestic Stevenson Lighthouse, is only a short distance from the cottage, as is the Eoropie Dunes Park, an educational play centre which makes a wonderful day out for both children and adults alike. It is also a great area for surfing. Port of Ness Harbour, featured in Peter May’s book ‘The Blackhouse’ is also only a short drive from Struan Cottage.
This is a very central location for exploring the entire area, and is 25 miles from the main town of Stornoway with its shops, restaurants, museums and An Lanntair (an art centre and cultural venue).
You can enjoy days out visiting historical sites of the Callanish Stones, Carolway Broch, Ness Heritage Centre, Bosta and Great Benera, Blackhouse village or just enjoy the pristine sandy beaches on the west coast, especially Uig Bay where the famous Lewis Chessmen were found. There is an abundance of wildlife, too, making this a birdwatchers’ paradise, or you can enjoy loch and sea angling. Hill walking can be undertaken on the Clisham on the Isle of Harris (the highest mountain in the Western Isles).
Boat trips depart from Stornoway, Uig and Great Bernera for whale and dolphin watching, and also further afield to the Shiant Isles and St Kilda. Beach ¼ mile. Shop ½ mile, pub 2 miles, restaurant 3 miles.
