Mews Cottage, Whitby

North York Moors. Sleeps up to 5

Mews Cottage is a charming period property located off Whitby’s prestigious St Hilda’s Terrace, near the lovely Pannett Park. The cottage benefits from its own private parking space for one car, a real boon in the centre of town. It is finished to a very high standard, offering spacious accommodation for five people. A ground floor bedroom and bathroom are a real advantage for visitors with mobility issues. Park your car immediately in front of the cottage and enter the hallway which leads to a light and welcoming sitting room with views over the town towards the harbour. Relax on the comfortable sofas and, in a quieter moment, borrow a book from the small library. There’s also a TV/DVD and WiFi for entertainment at the end of a busy day sightseeing. A dining area completes the space. Double doors link the dining area to a large kitchen, fitted with stylish contemporary units. The ground floor also has a pleasing single bedroom, decorated in sunny shades, plus a bathroom with a bath, shower over, basin and WC. Moving upstairs, a beautiful king-size double bedroom with en-suite shower room awaits. The décor is so restful and organic: willow-patterned fabrics, a real wood floor and exposed beams, with a lovely easy chair and lamps for reading. Wake up to views over to the harbour. Across the landing, there is a twin bedroom, tastefully decorated in lavender hues, also boasting long-reaching views towards the town and harbour. Wooden flooring and an original (decorative) fireplace add old-world charm. To the outside is a small area with seating. Pull up a chair, pour yourself a coffee and breathe in that lovely seaside air – instant rejuvenation! A short stroll and you are right in the heart of the thriving harbour, with bustling restaurants, cafes and bars which line the waterfront. Rest a while and watch the world go by as pretty boats depart for the heritage coast and children drop their crabbing lines into the River Esk. It’s a wonderful atmosphere. The Yorkshire coast is a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, quaint fishing villages, peaceful bays and miles of long sandy beaches. Robin Hood’s Bay is a fossil hunter’s paradise and the village, with its maze of cobbled streets leading down to the beach, is picture-perfect. Further south, Bempton Cliffs are home to nearly half a million seabirds, including puffins, making this stretch of coastline the UK’s largest mainland seabird colony. With so much to see and do, one visit may not be enough. Mews Cottage is a homely and refined base from which to explore this stunning part of the UK.
