Dyffryn Cottage is a traditional Welsh stone cottage in a small and peaceful hamlet of Painscastle. It has a large enclosed cottage garden, pretty bedrooms, a cosy sitting room with a lovely inglenook fireplace and a fabulous large sunny conservatory that opens up to make the most of the big, very private garden.

Across the village square is the highly acclaimed pub, The Roast Ox which serves excellent food and real ales.

The village of Painscastle is close to the Offas Dyke trail, the Begwyn Hills, a National Trust-protected range of hills which is ideal country for walking and birdwatching. It is off the beaten track with excellent walking, road cycling and mountain biking as well as canoeing on the river Wye. For the less energetic wandering through Hay-on-Wye (only 6 miles away) browsing the bookshops and independent shops.

Dyffryn Cottage is a great base from which to explore the Brecon Beacons, Mid Wales, the Border country and Herefordshire with its pretty villages and good lunch time pubs.

Sleeps 6 - 3 bedrooms

Kitchen ? well equipped with an electric cooker with hob, microwave, fridge and a freezer, dishwasher and a washing machine. Welsh Dresser, kitchen table and chairs.

An entrance lobby with room for coats and boots etc.

Sitting room ? cosy and spacious with oak beams, comfortable sofas and chairs, a long dining table and chairs. The centre piece is a magnificent stone fireplace with a huge oak lintel and wood burning stove.

Double doors lead from the sitting room through to a conservatory with views all around the garden.

The bathroom: Has a bath with a shower over, handbasin and toilet.

Garden: Leading out from the very spacious sunny conservatory is a lovely well-kept large and secluded garden with flower beds, large enough certainly for children to play hide-and-seek with mature shrubs and fruit trees, a stone terrace with plenty of garden furniture.

Information about the area:

It is approximately 4.5 miles down to Clyro village where there is a very good garage and shop and another pub The Rhydspence Inn. The village of Clyro is where the wandering rural curate Francis Kilvert lived who recorded his walks in rural countryside in his famous diaries through The Welsh Marches.

Hay on Wye is just 6 miles away. Hay is well known for The Hay Literary Festival and with many specialist secondhand book shops. The bookshops and The Festival attracts enthusiasts and academics from all over the world to browse in this popular little town. Overlooked by the magnificent 12th century Hay Castle (at present under restoration) and surrounded by boutique clothes shops, antique shops, cafes and restaurants.

Brecon and the Wye Valley, The Black Mountains and The Brecon Beacons National Park are an easy drive away. There is a particularly wonderful drive over Hay Bluff in The Black Mountains, through The Llantony Valley visiting Capel-y-Ffin and Llantony Priory and Abbey from Hay-on-Wye to Abergavenny but be prepared for a very scenic drive with narrow single track roads if you decide to take that road.

An easy drive to visit Hereford where you will find in Hereford Cathedral The Mappa Mundi, the largest medieval map known to exist of the world at that time. This is Elgar country whose music is said to have been inspired by the glorious countryside of The Mortimer Trail and Hargest Ridge, Offa's Dyke and The Black Mountains.

For anyone wishing to enjoy outdoor activities in the area, on The River Wye there is plenty of opportunities for fishing or canoeing. The area has of course brilliant walking, wonderful cycle trails, untouched natural habitats with many species of birds and wildlife. A very peaceful but interesting place to stay.
