Malthouse Cottage, Swansea

Swansea. Sleeps up to 4

Brandy Cove and Pwll Du BayOnly a mile and a half through the village and along the Gower Coast Path, will bring you to hidden Brandy Cove and Pwll Du Bay, which are only accessible on foot and probably Gower’s most secret beaches. Both are steeped in history and legend. Brandy Cove gets its name from the days when smuggling was rife on the Gower Peninsula and the sands were used to land illicit cargos of tobacco and alcohol. Today it is a charming cove ideal for swimming and rock pooling. Caswell Bay and Surf AcademyA 2 mile drive will bring you to Caswell Bay, a large sandy beach sheltered by limestone cliffs. It is ideal for safe bathing and made all the more appealing by the Surf Academy. Here you can hire the equipment to try out the waves with stand-up paddle boards or surf boards. Lessons can be booked for all levels and ages. The Cafe serves awesome bacon butties and treats all year round, whatever the weather. Langland Bay and Langland Bay Brasserie Langland is one of the more popular beaches in Gower. Five minutes from the village of Mumbles with its castle, pier and lifeboat station, Langland’s wide stretch of flat clean sand, together with the fact that it has a lifeguard patrol during the summer months, make it the perfect bucket and spade beach. It is also popular with local surfers. Evenings are a treat at Langland Brasserie which serves great bistro food and offers stunning views across the bay. There are tennis courts to hire just behind the Victorian beach huts - Langland Bay really is a top destination for all. Langland Bay and Pennard Golf ClubsWithin 3 miles in each direction are two spectacular golf clubs, Pennard and Langland Bay - both offering a great golfing experience and both located on the coastal path, surrounded by glorious walking and spectacular views. Three Cliffs BayThree Cliffs is an iconic beach and one of Gower's most dramatic. The river valley meanders down to the sea past castle, salt marsh and sand dunes and at the tide's edge the three cliffs are enchanting in all seasons. Ramblers, climbers and beach-goers flock here but the beach is vast and always feels as if it belongs solely to nature even in the height of summer. Take a picnic - there are no cafes to spoil the view here. The beach has a seasonal lifeguard station - please take care with children. Oxwich Bay and the acclaimed Beach House RestaurantJust a few miles away is the glorious, privately owned Oxwich beach - part of Penrice Estate. Walk for hours among the protected, pristine sand dunes and ancient woodlands and across the sweeping bay - or hire a sailing dinghy, kayak or longboard to admire Gower from the sea. Seals and porpoises are a common sight near these unspoiled shores. Sample locally sourced, cutting-edge food at The Beach House Restaurant - the newly opened sister restaurant to ‘Coast’ at Saundersfoot and The Grove at Narberth - and dine at the water’s edge with stunning views and the sounds of the waves. Mumbles Village and Oystermouth CastleMumbles is minutes away and the recently restored Oystermouth Castle, majestically overlooking Swansea Bay, is one of Wales' finest. Explore parts that have been hidden away for centuries and learn about the castle's exciting history. See ancient graffiti art from the 14th century, private staircases leading from vaults to banqueting halls and walk out onto a 30-foot high glass bridge. Events are held here throughout the year. In the bustling seaside village you will also find a host of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants to suit every taste. Try Bistro Pierre for classic French cuisine and awe-inspiring views across Swansea Bay and the Lighthouse. The Gower Crab Shack on The Promenade serves fresh local seafood for you to enjoy straight from the paper - dining doesn't get fresher than this. Further afieldThe Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust's National Centre in Llanelli has excellent facilities, making it a great place for a day out for the whole family. Covering some 450 acres, the reserve has a host of varied habitats including pools, lagoons and streams adjoining the saltmarshes and shore of Burry Inlet in Carmarthenshire. The views of Gower across the estuary are enchanting from here and anyone with a general interest in nature and wildlife will find this an absorbing and enjoyable day out. Pet-friendly little cottage full of character ideal for couples and small families alike with the Gower’s delights on the doorstep.
