This lovely stone building is the larger one of two delightful properties, set one above the other, next door to The Old Coach House (24689) and in the courtyard of Brook House, which dates back to the 12th-century. Brook House is oozing in history, and has stood through many wars throughout its time. Many famous people from the past have visited this house, including Henry VII in 1499. Other famous visitors included Winston Churchill, Lloyd George, the Astor’s, the Prince of Wales (Edward VII) and Queen Mary. In the mid 1800’s the house was owned by the Seely family and one of the famous visitors to Brook House during Charles Seely’s ownership was Garibaldi, the Italian General and Politician. Jack Seely, who inherited the house from his father Charles, was Secretary of State for War at the outbreak of WWI, although he resigned due to being caught up in political difficulties with Ireland (the Curragh affair) and was replaced by General Kitchener. He fought in the war with his horse, Warrior, who became famous as the horse the Germans couldn’t kill.
Today, the grounds of the property holds three self-contained properties (Westbrook ref 18919, Northbrook ref 18920 and The Old Coach House ref 24689), which are situated in the peaceful and private Old Brook House Estate located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Westbrook is a charming property that has been renovated with style and comfort in mind, boasting a modern kitchen/diner, a cosy living room with a wood burner and three lovely bedrooms. Just across the courtyard you will find Westbrook’s own spacious fenced garden.
There is an abundance of scenery from the rolling countryside to the outstanding heritage coastline offering a great range of walking routes with over 500 miles of footpaths including the The Tennyson Trail, named after the famous poet who once resided on the island. One mile away is the unspoilt golden dark sands of Brook Bay and a little further along the coast is the busier Compton Beach. They both have views of the white cliffs of Freshwater Bay but it is also a great place to find fossils. At low tide there may even be a chance to see dinosaur footprints in the sandstone ledge at Hanover Point. The small pretty village of Brighstone is only 3 miles way offering a shop, pub, restaurant and a post office. The Isle of Wight offers many places to visit including Chessell Pottery which is a working pottery with a paint studio where you can make a memento to take home with you (1.2 miles). Head towards Niton and you will find Blackgang Chine (8.5 miles), the UK’s oldest amusement park which features rides, life-sized dinosaurs, pirate ships, fairy villages and much more. If you continue further along towards Ventnor you can visit the octagonal tower of St Catherine’s Lighthouse which is situated at the most southerly point of the island, offering views out to the English Channel. Dinosaur Isle home to the islands fossil and geological heritage (17 miles), Robin Hill Country park offering exciting rides and adventure play all set in beautiful rolling down land and forest (12 miles).
