This spacious and delightfully restored terraced holiday cottage was originally built in the Victorian era for the now closed Oakeley Quarry, which was the largest slate quarry in the world. The cottage has a good sized living area, a warming wood burner for chilly nights, and a small patio for enjoying the sunny weather. Just opposite the cottage is the Llechwedd Slate Quarry, which is where the 21st-century entrepreneurs have established some fantastic adrenaline attractions! Zip World Titan is the world’s largest zip wire zone, with three quadruple zip wires enabling you to fly over the slate quarry enjoying the view (weather permitting). Underground, in an old slate cavern the size of St Paul’s Cathedral, is Bounce Below, where you can bounce on trampoline nets and slides to your hearts content. There’s also the Stiniog Downhill Mountain Bike Trail – great for mountain bikers.
To learn a little of the history of the area, no visit would be complete without a visit to the Deep Mine at Llechwedd to discover what life was like for the Victorian slate quarrymen. The town of Blaenau Ffestiniog itself is ¾ mile away and also provides one end of the famous Ffestiniog Railway, where you can enjoy refreshments at your seat on the spectacular journey behind a steam train as the line twists and turns on the journey down to the coast at Porthmadog. You can break your journey at Minffordd Station and visit the quirky Italianate village of Portmeirion designed by Sir Clough Williams Ellis. Porthmadog itself has a small harbour and the lovely beach of Black Rock Sands at Morfa Bychan which stretches for miles! From the cottage, travel over the top of the Crimea Pass to Dolwyddelan and its castle. Built by the Welsh Princes in the 13th century, Dolwyddelan Castle was the birthplace of Prince Llewelyn ap Iorwerth – known as Llewelyn the Great. There are also some delightful walks in Dolwyddelan – in the Gwydyr Forest, to the summit of Moel Siabod (2860ft) or in the hidden valley of Cwm Penamnen. A little further on is the pretty village of Betws-y-Coed, with a range of outdoor shops and some lovely riverside walks. Blaenau Ffestiniog is a great central location from which to explore the area, and the lovely west facing coastline of Cardigan Bay and Harlech, the sleepy Llyn Peninsula and mighty Caernarfon Castle are all within easy reach. Beach 12 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.
