. If you’re looking for a holiday property completely off the beaten track, nestling in woodland overlooking the meandering Tamar River, then Okel Tor Mine is for you.
Okel Tor Mine is situated on the tidal reaches of the River Tamar, just downstream from Morwellham Quay, where the BBC series ‘Edwardian Farm’ was filmed.
Okel Tor Mine is acknowledged by English Heritage to be one of the best surviving 19th century tin mines nationally. It is both an Ancient Monument and World Heritage Site.
The Smithy (ref TPY) was the workshop of the mine, where miners’ picks were sharpened and The Count House (ref TPZ) is the former mine captain’s office. The cottages are about 15 yards apart and screened from each other with vegetation, both are Grade II listed and situated in an elevated position within approximately 16 acres of natural woodland and lowland heath on the banks of the River Tamar with beautiful views of Devon. There are a number of interesting ruins and an abundance of flora and fauna.
The village of Calstock is a short walk away and has a village shop, a pub serving food and a railway station with regular services to Plymouth. The National Trusts enchanting Cotehele House is also within walking distance and the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail actually passes through Okel Tor Mine. Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and the sandy beaches at Whitsand Bay on the south coast are just a short drive away. Horse riding nearby. Beach 20 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
