Eating out from Yr Hen BeudyWithin a two miles of the cottage enjoy good food and drink at 'Y Ffarmers' in the pretty village of Llanfihangel y Creuddyn - it is family and dog friendly and has a lovely beer garden - or the 'New Cross Inn' at nearby New Cross. The Talbot Hotel at Tregaron is also good and in Aberaeron there is a selection of top class eateries including the Manuka Restaurant. Aberystwyth too has a wide variety of eating and drinking places to choose from - do try the seafront restaurant Gwest Cymru on Marine Terrace - great food and lovely views!AberystwythA 10 minute drive from this comfortable holiday cottage is the vibrant university town of Aberystwyth. Home to the National Library of Wales where you can visit the Art Centre and Theatre, with its year-round programme of events. Aberystwyth nestles between 3 hills and has 2 beaches. With a wide, sweeping promenade overlooked by Victorian and Georgian buildings, there is also a pier and harbour as well as castle ruins.A visit to the Ceredigion Museum on the high street is a must!Try a ride on the longest electric cliff railway in Britain climbing to the top of Constitution Hill. There is a fantastic panoramic view, a 'Camera Obscura' and a café for a little refreshment. On every first and third Saturday there is a Farmers market - well worth a visit!BorthA small seaside village with a long sandy and shingle beach, popular with families and surfers alike. At the southern end of the beach, you can sometimes see ancient remains of a submerged forest. There are those who like to think that these are remains of Cantre'r Gwaelod, a legendary Welsh land which was flooded and lost through the carelessness of its night watchman. Borth Animalarium is a zoo in miniature - home to a mixture of exotic and unusual animals such as monkeys, wallabies, snakes and crocodiles and also some more domestic animals that visitors are able to pet and feed. The Rheidol Valley Steam Railway near Aberystwyth holiday cottageExcursions run from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge - enjoy spectacular views of the wooded Rheidol Valley on the hour-long journey. At Devil's Bridge you can see the famous '3 bridges' and walk through the valley to view the dramatic waterfalls. Rheidol Cycle TrailThis 28 km trail takes you from Aberystwyth to Devils Bridge and Nant yr Arian where there is a selection of trails available from the Visitor Centre. Perhaps your dog would enjoy running alongside?Rheidol Riding CentreRheidol Riding centre is approximately a 10 minute drive from Yr Hen Beudy. All types of leisure riding are offered from 1/2 hour lead rein for small children (minimum of 4 years old) on quiet ponies, to the more exciting one and two and half hour hacks for competent riders. All-day rides can be arranged for experienced riders and also pub rides during the holiday season. The Magic of Life Butterfly House, Rheidol ValleyCome and see some of the largest and most colourful butterflies in the world! Walk among them and watch them feeding, courting and laying eggs. Devils BridgeFamous for the unique arrangement of its three bridges which are built one on top of the other, it is believed that the original bridge was built by either the Cistercian monks of Strata Florida abbey or by the Knights Templar. Various paths are accessed via coin-operated turnstiles that lead down to either side of the bridges. The longest, steepest path goes right down to the valley floor giving wonderful views of spectacular cascading waterfalls and crossing the raging torrent before climbing back all the way up the other side. The Hafod EstateTravel a little further inland to the Hafod Estate in the Ystwyth Valley. Recognised as one of the finest examples in Europe of a ‘Picturesque’ landscape (an ideal which was part of the 18th Century Romantic Movement), this has been renovated and conserved and won an award for the Restoration of a Georgian Landscape in 2007. If you enjoy walking this is a joy. The estate contains a number of laid-out paths which you can walk alone or with a guide. There are waterfalls, a narrow suspension bridge over a gorge, an obelisk built in 1805, narrow wooded valleys, open parkland, rushing streams and an alpine bridge. Amongst all of these is a huge variety of wildlife. Strata Florida Abbey (Vale of Flowers)This is an atmospheric and evocative, historically important site. The majesty of the huge carved west doorway illustrates how impressive this building must once have been. The plan of the church can still be clearly traced and some of the original richly decorated tiles from the Abbey are still intact. Llywernog Silver/Lead Mine - Museum and CavernsVenture a few miles inland and visit Llywernog - an authentic 18th century silver mine. This will offer Llywernog a fascinating insight into life nearly 200 years ago, when the mine employed over 60 people. Today, Llywernog is a unique and educational family adventure and continues to be developed as a major all-weather attraction. TregaronTregaron is a small traditional market town lying on the river Brenig, a tributary of the River Teifi. In the main square you will find the Rhiannon Welsh Gold Centre, a wonderful shop and gallery showcasing beautiful Welsh gold jewellery. Just outside Tregaron, is the Caron National Nature Reserve, one of the finest raised bog systems in Britain – areas of deep peat built up over the last 12000 years surrounded by complex and unique natural habitats. Paths, bird hides, information points and guided walks and displays are provided and visitors are welcome to wander freely and enjoy . Red Kite Feeding Centre, Bwlch Nant yr Arian, PonterwydThis is an award winning forest re-creation centre, famous for daily Red Kite feeding which can be seen, along with lovely views, from its completely re-developed Visitor Centre. The centre is now an ecologically-friendly building with excellent restaurant facilities and a gift shop. The daily Red Kite feeding can also be seen from many places around the lake and there is a video system with a number of cameras around the lake which give you a close-up view of the birds. AberaeronThis quaint Georgian town with its brightly painted houses is within a half an hour drive. Originally a small fishing village, it grew into one of the major trading ports on the Cardigan Bay Coast and became a bustling centre for many successful industries including ship building and producing the famous long handled, heart shaped, Aberaeron shovel. Now the the town has lots of boutique-style shops to browse, art galleries, small tea shops and an excellent fish and chip take-away, as well as the famous 'Hive on the Quay' with its unique mouth-watering honey ice cream!Fantasy Farm LlanrhystudSomething for all the family to enjoy from friendly animals to exciting adventure or just relaxing in the splendour of Fantasy Farm Park.
