Neighborhood

Stretching from east of the city centre to Brighton Marina, Kemptown oozes village charm, community spirit, inclusivity, sustainability and fun. If Brighton is chill, then Kemptown is super-chill. While Brighton is known for having a strong LGBTQIA+ community, Kemptown is at the very heart of Pride celebrations every summer. In other words, you can’t get much more Brighton than Kemptown!

A glorious blend of elegant seafront squares and grand Regency crescents with lush green gardens, Kemptown has a lively, generous hub of independent shops, delis, vintage stores, indie and second-hand bookshops, restaurants, cafés and pubs centring on St. James Street and St. George’s Road. Independent, individual, fashionable, authentic, pushing boundaries – whether it’s a different take on popular cuisine, stylish interiors, retro furniture or the latest thought-provoking must-reads, Kemptown knows what it likes, and it would seem visitors agree! And as if this creative, free-thinking hub wasn’t appealing enough, it’s just a short walk from the beach. (And for those who fancy baring all to the elements, the naturist beach is a tad further along, towards the Marina.)

Described by Time Out magazine as “a boho-enclave within a boho-enclave”, it’s not surprising that Kemptown recently made it into Time Out’s Top 50 World’s Coolest Neighbourhoods! And it’s about to become even cooler as the seafront here has been the focus of an ambitious regeneration project in recent years. Plans to improve biodiversity and accessibility in the area are underway, as is the construction of a 50m heated outdoor swimming pool.

Another significant feather in Kemptown’s colourful cap is its vibrant nightlife scene. With clubs and bars along the seafront from Brighton Palace Pier to Yellowave Beach Sports Café, this is an area having way too much fun to sleep. But if you need a place to recover the morning after the night before, there’s no shortage of places to sit with a coffee and watch the world go by or gaze dreamily out to sea.
