Stanhope lies within the heart of superb walking country in the stunning North Pennines AONB and is within easy reach of a number of significant historical and cultural landmarks making this delightful cottage and ideal destination for a countryside getaway. Once forming part of the 19th Century Weardale Union Workhouse the property has been tastefully and sympathetically converted to provide comfortable, characterful accommodation which includes an open plan living, kitchen and dining area with original stone fireplace and log burner; the perfect place to unwind at the end of a busy day walking or sightseeing. Upstairs there is a spacious double bedroom with period, king size brass bed, ample storage and lovely views over the village and valley beyond. An equally spacious and bright bathroom completes the first-floor accommodation. Outside you will find a decked, south facing patio garden with table and chairs, perfect for an early morning breakfast or a relaxing glass of wine or two in the evening as you watch the sunset. If you do manage to tear yourself away from the comfort of this cosy retreat you will discover an interesting array or shops, pubs and cafes on your door step. In addition, Stanhope boasts an art gallery, visitor centre and the only outdoor swimming pool in Durham (open in the summer months). Close by is the historic city of Durham with its landmark cathedral, Bishop Auckland Castle- home of ‘Kynren’, the magnificent Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle and beautiful Ushaw College, one of Durham’s hidden jewels and steeped in history. Further afield you will find Hadrians Wall, the stunning Northumberland Coast and Holy Island. You will find Old Workhouse Cottage is a truly delightful place to stay at any time of year.
