Sanday, is the largest of the northerly Orkney Isles, appropriately named as it is mostly made up of swathes of white sandy beaches with turquoise waters and many sand dunes. The stunning and unspoilt coastline around the island must be viewed to be believed – all that is missing are the palm trees. Adding to the appeal of Sanday are the many impressive archaeological sites uncovered over the years including brochs and burial mounds, with one of the most significant discoveries being a Viking boat burial complete with skeletons. The island is also home to a very distinctive striped lighthouse designed and built by Thomas Smith assisted Robert Stevenson back in 1807. Situated on the edge of Lady Village you will find Heritage Visitor Centre which holds a wealth of fascinating information going back many generations of island residents. Beside this is The Croft, a small house recreated to show family life many years ago. Sanday has a rich natural habitat and is home to many species of birds and wildlife making it a wildlife enthusiasts paradise. A holiday to Sanday will be a unique and unforgettable experience where many happy memories will be made and enjoyed. Beach 10 yards. Shop 2½ miles, pub and restaurant 4 miles.
