The port of Harwich is located at the north east corner of Essex, on the south side of the estuary of the River Stour and River Orwell. The River Stour marks the county border with Suffolk. There is always plenty of interest to see on the rivers, from small yachts and fishing boats to huge container ships that tie up opposite at Felixstowe dock. Seal watching trips are usually available from the Ha’Penny Pier.

Harwich is steeped in history, most of it maritime but plenty of other things to look at too. The Electric Palace was built in 1911, and was one of the oldest purpose built cinemas in the country. The Redoubt, a Napolionic fort built into a hill, its guns covering the harbour entrance, is well worth a visit. The high lighthouse and the low lighthouse were built to create a transit bearing to guide ships safely into harbour, which is now the maritime museum. The Harwich Society run regular walking tours around the town.

Just a short stroll will take you everywhere in Harwich. You are close to the quay, beach, which is a little gem that often gets overlooked, and the railway station should you wish to venture further afield - London can be reached within an hour. A great selection of pubs and restaurants are on the doorstep. Whatever takes your fancy, be it a romantic getaway, a fishing trip, golf, sailing, cycling, walking, eating out or just relaxing, Harwich is the place to be. Beach 220 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 110 yards.
