The cottage is within an easy walk to the centre of this ancient county town, and it has a variety of shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants on offer, as well as the Haverfordwest Farmers Market. Held on the riverside every Friday you can buy produce such as fresh fish, crabs and lobster, organic meat, vegetables, artisan cheeses and traditional recipe cakes. The town centre is dominated by the Western Cleddau river and the 12th-century castle towering above it. Situated within the castle wall, and previously the old prison governor’s house, is the town museum. It houses exhibitions of art and local history and artefacts relating the town’s past. Down river on the west bank in a pleasant setting are the ruins of an Augustinian Priory that have been excavated.
The rest of Pembrokeshire begs to be explored and the diversity of the scenery is breath-taking. Towering cliffs plunge into the sea, and in complete contrast are the Preseli Mountains to the north. These rolling moorland hills, rich with wildlife and history, are the origin of the Stonehenge Bluestones. Flowing right through the heart of the county is the Daugleddau Estuary, a series of quiet tidal backwaters that at low tide reveal salt marsh and mud flats teeming with bird life. Of course there’s the internationally recognised 186 mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path that wiggles its way through all of these amazing landscapes providing you with awesome scenery, perfect beaches, wildlife encounters and new experiences at every turn. Come and explore and make Holly Cottage your base. Beach 7 miles. Shop and pub 100 yards, restaurant 350 yards.
