Walks and Cycle PathsWalk or cycle down the quiet tree lined lane, passing the ancient church of Trefdraeth to Maalltraeth sands, then follow the well sign-posted path across the estuary to Newburough Warren Nature Reserve. This is a birdwatchers paradise with footpaths through the forest and hides strategically placed, often near the small lakes, from which to observe the wildlife. Look out for the shy red squirrels which thrive on the island. Malltraeth Sands and Estuary The beautiful mile and a half long sandy beach is accessed via a pleasant mile walk. Therefore the dune and forest backed beach is never crowded. Malltraeth Estuary is home to myriad birds, a great inspiration to internationally renowned naturalistic artist, the late Charles Tunniclife. See his paintings in Oriel y Mon in Llangefni. Llanddwyn Island and Newborough This is one of the finest beaches in Britain - long stretches of pristine sands and clean clear waters with dramatic views of Snowdonia across on the mainland. St. Dwynwen, the patron saint of lovers, Wales's own Valentine, roamed these shores in mythology at least! Nevertheless, it is a truly romantic spot - wonder to the little lighthouse at low-tide and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Dinner at the elegant Loft Restaurant is perfect for a special occasion (booking advisable). Marram Grass at Newburough is in the 2016 Good Food Guide and has had coverage in most of the Saturday broadsheets. Only a tin shed, but don't be put off by the basic hippy interior - the food is excellent. Also in Newburough is Codmother - the best fish and chips in Anglesey. ShoppingMenai Bridge has a Waitrose and there is an Asda in nearby Llangefeni. Essentials can be found 1 mile away in the village store. Llannon Mill is a pleasant drive away. It is the last working windmill on the island - buy freshly ground flour to take home for authentic tasting homemade bread. Wonder through the grounds and explore the reconstructed roundhouses and glimpse a way of life that existed on the island 3000 years ago. Plas Newydd House and Garden (NT)A lovely setting with lawns rolling down to the beautiful Menai Straights. The views are breathtaking - sublime woodlands and Snowdonia's high peaks, with Stephenson's majestic Brittania Bridge standing in the foreground. Fine interiors give an insight into the life of the Marquis and his family, with murals by the artist Rex Whistler. BeaumarisArguably the prettiest town in North Wales, Beaumaris is the perfect place to browse lovely independent shops, explore the romantic castle surrounded by its moat, or enjoy a stroll along the Victorian pier.
