Set in a quiet location just inside the county of Herefordshire, these three attractive properties (refs UKC1505, UKC1506 and UKC1507) are a great base for exploring the lovely borderlands of Shropshire, Worcestershire and Powys. The local countryside is ideal for those who wish to be away from it all, yet be within easy reach of local amenities. There are a number of great pubs that serve food locally, and one is within walking distance. The garden areas are all open plan and look out across the natural countryside and, as the names suggests, this is home to a wide variety of birds and wildlife.
The area is known as Mortimer Country and you can drive through a number of black and white villages and visit a number of grand Norman castles, including the ruins of Wigmore Castle and Kingsland Castle. Mortimer’s Cross has a fantastic display showing information about the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross, an absolute key event in the Wars of the Roses. Other battle themed castles locally are Brampton Bryan and Hopton Castle. There are National Trust properties to visit nearby, including Berrington Hall and Croft Castle and Parkland, and slightly further afield, within an hours drive, are Powys Castle and Attingham Park. The local outdoor events team at Oaker Wood Leisure offer a more exhilarating time with quad trekking, paintballing, an aerial high ropes course, clay pigeon shoots and raft building. Ludlow and Hereford racecourses are nearby. Hereford’s cathedral, with its chained library which contains the Mappa Mundi, is a short drive away.
The county of Shropshire is home to some of England’s best attractions, including the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, the Severn Valley Railway, Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd, and Stokesay Castle. The area is also great for horseriding, walking and cycling. Shop 3 miles, pub ½ mile, restaurant 1 mile. These properties can be booked together to accommodate up to 10 guests.
