Kirkwall, the Orkney capital, is a vibrant and bustling market town with many shops, good restaurants and pubs and is perhaps best known for the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral, widely considered to be one of the finest medieval buildings in the north. Visit Highland Park and the Scapa Whisky Distilleries, and the Earls Palace to name just a few of the many attractions in Kirkwall itself. From Kirkwall you can visit many wonderful archaeological sites, take a ferry trip out to some of the wonderfully scenic Outer Isles, and visit some of the many museums and craft workshops – so much to see and do for all ages.
