Seven centuries ago, the new town was founded by Edward I to take the place of an older town of the same name which had been lost to the sea in a series of storms and now lies beneath the waters of Rye Bay. It became a bustling cinque port town and the centre of the wine trade with France with a smuggling history and hidden wine cellars beneath the broad streets, and it is the smallest town in the country to have its own mayor. Visit the museum and the 13th century church. Home to the writers Thackeray and Conrad, the actress Ellen Terry, and Millais was inspired to paint his famous portrait ’The Blind Girl’ with Winchelsea in the background. Winchelsea is situated where the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty meets Romney Marsh. There is an unspoilt shingle beach within a mile – take your shrimping net and binoculars to observe the many birds that frequent the area at low tide or explore the sands and rolling dunes at Camber, 7 miles. Rye, Hastings and Battle are all a short drive away. Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.
