Locals will make you feel right at home during your stay and the owner, who loves making hand-made sweet treats, will leave some in your welcome pack for your arrival. This well-equipped, immaculate bungalow is set in a quiet lane just a stone’s throw from Keith’s shops, pubs and restaurants.
This rural market town has Royal connections with Prince Edward once paying a surprise visit to the Kilt Centre in town, which also produces Balmoral tartan. The town also has a local swimming pool, bowls club and there is a choice of golf clubs. Events include the Keith Country Show held the second weekend in August each year, a 1940s week, and a music festival the first weekend in June where acts come from all over Scotland and Ireland to perform. Keith is the home of three distilleries, with the Strathisla Distillery, one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and producer of the famous Chivas Regal whisky within walking distance of the bungalow. Keith is also the start of the Malt Whisky Trail, a must for any whisky lover. Also within walking distance is ‘The Whisky Line’ heritage railway, which runs from Keith to Dufftown every weekend between Easter-end October. Special events are held on the railway throughout the year.
Set on the A96 it gives you easy access to the cities of Aberdeen and Inverness, which also has regular flights with other UK airports. Both cities can be reached within 1½ hours drive, by bus or by train; the station is within walking distance. Within 20 minutes’ drive you can be on the coast at Cullen, famous for its Cullen Skink soup. Picturesque Portsoy, with its world famous ice cream shop, and the fishing villages of Banff and Macduff are dotted along the coastline. Head to Spey Bay and you may be lucky enough to see seals swimming or visit the bird sanctuary at the environmental area of special interest.
Other places of interest include Johnsons Woollen Mills, which offers free guided tours, 17 miles away, Deans Shortbread Factory, 20 miles and Deskford Garden Galleries.
For keen walkers, the Cairngorms National Park can be reached within an hours’ drive and slightly further enjoy skiing at Braemar during the winter months.
Whatever you decide to do during your Scottish getaway be sure to pack your camera and make memories you’ll treasure for years’ to come. Beach 15 miles. Shops, pubs and restaurants 20 yards.
