DaleSet in a sheltered horseshoe-shaped bay, Dale is said to the sunniest spot in Wales! It is also a centre for water sports of all sorts - you can try your hand at sailing or surfing, kayaking or coasteering - West Wales Windsurfing and Sailing provide tuition for all abilities. The Boat House Cafe in the village offers daily provisions and good home cooking with friendly service. Dine alfresco at The Griffin Inn with its extensive fish menu - a popular, traditional old waterside pub by the beach. The Dale Peninsula beachesWest Dale Beach, a just a short walk away from Dale is West Facing - a sandy beach enclosed by towering cliffs accessible only by very steep steps. For surfers there are good waves in some conditions but strong currents, submerged outcrops and powerful waves make it suitable only for the experienced. Beautiful Marloes Beach is a huge expanse of sand at low tide and is backed by spectacular cliffs. It is a bit a walk from the car park but well worthwhile for family fun - for rock pooling and fossil hunting. Skomer Island Boat Trips - a must for any visitor to PembrokeshirePassing through the village of Marloes brings you to Martin’s Haven – the little harbour at the end of the nearby Marloes peninsula from which boats go each day in the season to the magical bird islands of Skomer and Skokholm, just off the Pembokeshire coast. These islands are famous for their wonderful bird life (some of the richest for wildlife in Britain) - especially Skomer's enormous and comical colony of puffins - and the perfect place to visit for the day and escape the modern world. The Wick on Skomer is a perfect place to sit and watch puffins in early summer land and take off from their burrows in the ground. Marloes Mere and the Pembrokeshire Coast PathJust outside Marloes village is Marloes Mere - a wetland which was a famous source of medicinal leeches until the beginning of the twentieth century (though sadly they have now died out). Home to a huge variety of birds, there are hides for bird enthusiasts to spot - depending on the time of year - Teal and Snipe, Marsh Harriers, Barn Owls, Choughs, Swallows and Swifts. A really fascinating place. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which runs 186 miles from Poppit Sands in the north to Amroth in the south, circles the Marloes and Dale Peninsulas and the passes the entrance Lighthouse Cottage. Now joined up with the All Wales Coastal Path, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path is a place of magnificent scenery, wonderful bird and wildlife and a huge variety of beautiful beaches. Milford Haven Marina and the Torch TheatreStroll around the fashionable marina shops, cafes and bars and stock up at the Quayside Deli while enjoying the nautical atmosphere of Milford haven Marina. There is something magnetic about watching the bobbing boats, listening to the slapping of halyards and imagining the expensive yachts on trips to far-off lands. At the end of the Marina is the Pheonix Bowl - a lively 10 pin bowling centre with a fully licensed bar and Galley Diner. Up the hill from the Marina is the The Torch Theatre - Pembrokeshire’s award-winning venue for live stage productions, cinema and musical events. Little Haven and Broad HavenTo the north of the Dale Peninsula is St Bride’s Bay. Broad Haven (north) beach, at the back of the bay, is a Blue Flag beach, popular for both water sport enthusiasts and families. Haven Water Sports offer hire facilities for wet suits, surfboards, body-boards and kayaks. Next door to Broad Haven is Little Haven, a quaint old fishing village full of charm and character with a tea room, bistro, gallery and choice of 3 excellent pubs. Pembroke, Carew and Manorbier CastlesPembrokeshire is home to the majority of the castles on the Landsker Line – historically the line of division between the English and Welsh speaking parts of the county - although not all of the castles are either complete or open to the public. Pembroke Castle which stands at the northern entrance to Pembroke town, a unique medieval walled town which dates back over 900 years, was restored in the early 20th century and is a very complete example of a Norman fortress. An excellent venue for children and enthusiasts of all things historical – visualise past battles or visit on a day of re-enactments for (almost) the real thing! Carew Castle is a lovely ruin. Also a venue for re-enactments during the summer months, it is on the banks of an inlet of the Carew River and it is pleasant to meander along the river to the Mill and take tea on the lawn. Manorbier is in the most lovely position, perched on the hill above the sandy beach at Manorbier. Built in the 11th century, it was the home of Gerald of Wales who wrote of it that – ‘In all the broad lands of Wales, Manorbier is the most pleasant place by far’. St Davids No visit to Pembrokeshire is complete without a trip to St Davids with its magnificent medieval cathedral, small individual shops, restaurants and art and craft galleries. Boat trips to the bird islands sailing from St Justinian's can also be booked from here. Family Days outAs well as all the natural wealth of the county, in Pembrokeshire there is plenty to entertain the family. Oakwood, Heatherton and the Dinosaur Park theme parks in the south of the county or in the north at Sealyham and TYF - there are lots more to choose from!
