The spectacular Falls of Feugh are just over the road, a stunning part of the River Dee where salmon can be seen leaping up the apparently unscalable rocks, amidst an often raging torrent, compelled by instinct to return to their spawning grounds further up the river. In the autumn the river is often in spate and sitting in the living room you can listen to the sound of the falls while reading a book or enjoying a drink. Marvellous!

The Royal Deeside Railway is based at the Milton of Crathes Station and recreates the original line from Aberdeen to Ballater. Steam and diesel services start from Milton of Crathes and provide splendid views over the River Dee and the hills to the south. This is also Castle Country and the enchanting Crathes Castle, a 16th century fairy-tale like castle, is an easy drive. Further on, the ski resorts of the Lecht give way to the famous Whisky Trail around Glenlivet and Tomintoul, making for a great day trip in stunning scenery.
