The charming village of Thornton Le Dale is a delight; old fashioned friendliness with an unhurried pace of life. The village has everything you could need, yet still retains its quaint village beauty, with the chocolate box thatched cottages and historic Alms houses. The tranquil Thornton beck winds through the village, with many walking trails to follow. On the village green there’s the original stocks and market cross, where on Sundays during the summer months. local bands plays music to entertain you whilst you sit back and enjoy one of the wonderful ice-creams the village is renowned for.

Only a couple of miles away is the traditional Yorkshire market town of Pickering, which combines atmospheric old inns, 12th-century castle, museum, remarkable medieval frescoes in the local church, and the North York Moors Railway taking visitors on a nostalgic steam train journey through the spectacular heather-clad moorland scenery.

The ancient City of York is just 26 miles away and offers the majestic minster, the fascinating Jorvik Viking Centre, the Castle Museum, the National Railway Museum, and excellent shopping facilities. Castle Howard, setting for TV’s Brideshead Revisited, Nunnington Hall (National Trust), Duncombe Park, and Rievaulx Abbey, are just a few of the local treasures to discover. On the east coast lie the popular seaside resorts of Scarborough, 15 miles, and Filey, 19 miles, the serene fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay and the captivating old port of Whitby 20 miles, with its Captain Cook connections, as well as miles of sandy beaches and a colourful harbour. Just a 10-minute drive away visitors can enjoy Flamingo Land Theme Park and zoo or Dalby Forest, where there is a plethora of woodland walks, a visitor’s centre, picnic areas, bikes to hire and the popular “Go Ape” treetop zip lines. This is an ideal choice all year round and the National Park is gorgeous in all seasons.
