Region: Rich with fascinating historical sights and rolling countryside, experience Durham's breath-taking views from its position atop a craggy hill. From the iconic Romanesque Cathedral and 11th century Durham Castle nestled in the centre of town, to its sleepy villages and thriving Heritage Coast, Durham is the perfect holiday choice.

Town: The fortunes of adjacent Raby Castle and its owners have always been strongly tied with the picturesque Teesdale village of Staindrop. The Castle (which is open to the public) is one of England's most magnificent. The mediaeval heart has been enlarged and beautified throughout the centuries, and a walled garden and 200-acre deer park add to the beauty. Staindrop's broad village green is lined with intriguing shops, bars, and cafes. Barnard Castle, a popular market town with a castle, the Bowes Museum, and, of course, a wide selection of shops and tea houses, is 5 miles away. The varied treks in Teesdale will appeal to walkers.

Located in Darlington, this cottage is in a rural area. Bowes Museum and National Railway Museum at Shildon are cultural highlights, and some of the area's attractions include Walworth Castle Birds of Prey and Eggleston Hall. Sweet Greetings and Darlington Railway Centre and Museum are also worth visiting. Be sure not to miss outdoor adventures like cycling, rock climbing, and hiking.
