Strathmill House, Keith

Moray. Sleeps up to 8

Resting next door to a Scottish whisky distillery in the small market town of Keith, Strathmill House is a traditional Victorian villa reached via a private road, offering a group of eight a homely setting from which to explore Moray. Featuring an enclosed garden, gated driveway and spacious rooms all decorated with bright and light decor, alongside original floorboards and beautiful furnishings, Strathmill House presents a lovely dwelling, located around midway between Inverness and Aberdeen and not too far from the coast either. Step inside this vintage residence and be met with two separate reception rooms on either side of the large hallway, both with an open fire. The group can spread out between these beautiful well-lit rooms, with large bay windows and plush seating, the grown-ups can indulge in some wine and conversation in one while the children can watch a film on the TV in the other! Head into the dining room and gather around for a family feast, with plenty of space for all eight guests, where you can serve up a treat that was prepared in the kitchen, reached via three steps down. The kitchen is home to a fabulous gas Range cooker and hob, along with a fridge/freezer, microwave and dishwasher among the appliances. Enjoy sunny days in the pretty enclosed garden, sitting beneath the covered seating area to enjoy a morning breakfast and coffee. Completing the ground floor is the handy cloakroom, with a shower room and bathroom found on the first floor, you can choose how best to prepare for your day whether with a quick shower or a relaxing hot soak in the freestanding roll-top bath. Turn right after climbing the stairs and find a single bedroom and two king-size bedrooms, one of which can be turned into a twin on request thanks to zip/link beds, whilst heading left from the stairs brings you to another single and a double room, all with excellent furniture and plenty of space. The lovely little town of Keith is a very important stop on the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail due to being the home of Strathisla Distillery, known to be the oldest working distillery in all of Scotland dating from 1786, you can take a tour around the distillery and talk to the experts that create this popular drink, along with sampling some for yourself of course! With being home to four distilleries in total, including the one next door (Strathmill Distillery; however this one is not open to the public), Keith town also has lots of traditional shops, two butchers, a deli, a bakery and coffee shops. Discover a great range of pubs and restaurants to dine at in Keith, with the town centre being within walking distance; it is perfect for a special meal out with a host of different cuisines to suit all tastes. Visit nearby Huntly to see the 12th Century remains of Huntly Castle, incorporating it into a scenic walk along the River Deveron before returning into the attractive town centre. Enjoy an exciting sea adventure by heading up to the coast to the quaint fishing village of Cullen, which has a harbour, sandy beach, golf course, and a great fish & chip shop! Spey Bay also is a beautiful coastal reserve with the largest shingle beach in Scotland – dolphins, otters and ospreys are regularly spotted at the mouth of the estuary of the iconic river Spey, which flows through the centre of the reserve. From The Tugnet Ice House, you can enjoy a walk along the Speyside Way, or hop on your bikes and join the national cycle network which passes close to the reserve. The Gordon Castle Estate is another fabulous place to visit on the way to Spey Bay in Fochabers – they have great fresh produce to buy, a coffee shop, as well as different events going on in the walled garden. Why not book a Scottish Marine Safari, heading out on the Moray Firth to spot dolphins, harbour porpoises, grey and harbour seals, minke whales, and a host of sea birds, all while taking in the stunning coastal scenery from the fantastic converted traditional wooden fishing trawler! Also on the Castle and Antique trail, the town of Dufftown is home to Balvenie Castle, which also has a distillery offering a great day out, or travel down to the Cairngorms National Park for some breath-taking landscapes and excellent walking country!
