Head into The Bowes Museum, one of the most significant museums outside of London, to see a collection of European fine and decorative art set in a French-style chateau. Explore the ruins of the town's 12th century castle ruins, an English Heritage site, it still dominates over the river. The Witham is the towns arts centre and is where you can find a mix of live events including music, comedy and theatre as well as film, perfect for an evening's entertainment. Head to the monthly farmer's market held on 'the cobbles' in the Market Place and get some local fresh produce and pick up some souvenirs from local businesses, and make sure to wander around the 'Secret Garden of the North' at Eggleston Hall and Gardens where nearly five-acres contains beautiful paths, winding trails and pretty planted borders. Teesdale is home to Hamsterley Forest, County Durham's largest woodland. Here visitors will find countless waymarked trails and paths, and for those who prefer life on two wheels purpose build graded mountain bike trails will keep everyone entertained for hours. Less than twenty minutes drive away are the upper reaches of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where countless country pubs and views for miles await.
