Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan

5

Nash Point Lighthouse, located in Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, has a rich history dating back to its construction in 1832. This lighthouse was built in response to the tragic loss of numerous vessels and lives due to the treacherous Nash Sands. Originally illuminated by Argand burners, it transitioned through various lighting technologies, including paraffin 'Hood' burners and later, powerful electric lamps. By the 1960s, the lighthouse featured 1,500-watt lamps, which were eventually replaced with more efficient 150-watt lights. Now automated and monitored from Trinity House's Planning Centre in Harwich, Essex, the lighthouse has not required a keeper since 1998, leading to the conversion of two of its four dwellings into charming holiday cottages.

These cozy accommodations, designed to meet the needs of modern travelers, retain the original character of the lighthouse while providing contemporary comforts. Each cottage is equipped with luxurious mattresses, quality bedding and towels, fully stocked kitchens, and inviting sitting areas. The restoration has been conducted with care, ensuring that the essence of the historic building is preserved without compromising on the essentials for a comfortable stay. Guests can expect a peaceful retreat, as the remote location offers little to no mobile phone reception and no Wi-Fi, making it an ideal spot to disconnect and unwind. A landline telephone is available for emergencies, ensuring guests can stay safe while enjoying their escape.

The layout of Stella's single-storey accommodation includes a spacious sitting room, a separate dining area, and a modern kitchen fully equipped for all culinary needs. It features three bedrooms: a king-size room, a twin room, and a single room, accommodating up to five guests comfortably. The family bathroom is modern, complete with a bath and overhead shower, along with a separate toilet and additional wash basin. Outside, visitors can enjoy a private enclosed garden with gravelled space and stone furniture, perfect for al-fresco dining amidst the serene surroundings.

Guests at Nash Point Lighthouse have access to stunning nearby beaches, many of which are recognized with blue flag awards for their cleanliness and safety. Notable beaches include Ogmore-by-Sea, just over four miles away, as well as Barry Island, Southerndown, and Porthcawl, which are popular for windsurfing. For those looking to explore further, Cowbridge is a short drive away, offering a variety of shops, boutiques, art galleries, and dining options. Additionally, the Gower Peninsula, known for its breathtaking landscapes, is within reach, as well as the Mumbles. The lighthouse grounds are also of ecological significance, being designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the presence of the rare Tuberous Thistle, discovered in 1977.
