Nr Woolacombe, Devon

5

Located at Nr Woolacombe in Devon, Bull Point Lighthouse has been a beacon of safety since its construction in 1879, guiding vessels along the rugged coastline. After 93 years of incident-free operation, the lighthouse faced challenges in 1972 when ground movement caused a significant cliff collapse, leading to the partial destruction of the engine and fog station. The current lighthouse, built using much of the original equipment, is now automated and monitored remotely by Trinity House’s Planning Centre in Essex. This transition marked the end of the lighthouse keepers' era but paved the way for modern comforts, as the four cottages on the property have been refurbished to meet contemporary standards while retaining their historical charm.

The cottages at Bull Point Lighthouse offer a unique blend of history and modern amenities, providing a comfortable stay for visitors. Each cottage is equipped with luxurious mattresses, high-quality bedding, and well-equipped kitchens, ensuring a pleasant experience for 21st-century explorers. Although the fog horn was silenced in 1988, guests can enjoy the serene environment without disruption while taking in the stunning views of the Bristol Channel. With the addition of WiFi, albeit sometimes unreliable during storms, guests can stay connected while enjoying the natural beauty surrounding them. Binoculars are recommended for those interested in observing the local fishing boats as they navigate the waters.

The nearby village of Mortehoe is easily accessible on foot and offers a charming atmosphere with various pubs, restaurants, and local shops, including a fish and chip shop and delicatessen. For a wider selection of dining and shopping options, as well as a Blue Flag sandy beach, visitors can walk to Woolacombe, just 1.2 miles away, along the scenic South West Coast Path. A more adventurous option is the circular walk from Woolacombe to Putsborough Sands, approximately 4 miles long, where breathtaking views and potential seal sightings await. The historic town of Ilfracombe, located under 6 miles from the lighthouse, features the largest harbor on the North Devon Coast and is home to Damien Hirst's iconic sculpture, Verity.

The Siren cottage, one of four former lighthouse keeper's residences, features single-storey accommodation with a sea-facing sitting room, a separate dining area, and a fully-equipped kitchen. It includes two bedrooms with king-size beds and a third bedroom with a single bed, along with a modern bathroom. Guests can enjoy the shared outdoor areas, including a garden bench for soaking up the sun and picnic-style furniture in the front courtyard. The other cottages include Warden, the smallest that accommodates two guests and one dog; Triton, which sleeps four guests and welcomes two dogs; and Sherrin, a detached property that also sleeps five guests and allows two dogs. Each cottage provides a unique opportunity to experience the charm and history of Bull Point Lighthouse while enjoying the stunning coastal scenery.
