Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan

5

Nash Point Lighthouse, located in Llantwit Major within the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, was constructed in 1832 to safeguard vessels navigating the treacherous Nash Sands. The lighthouse has evolved over time, transitioning from Argand burners to paraffin 'Hood' burners, and eventually to 1,500 watt electric lamps in the 1960s, which were later downgraded to 150 watt. Currently, the lighthouse operates as an automated facility managed from Trinity House's Planning Centre in Harwich, Essex. The last of the lighthouse keepers departed in 1998, leading to the conversion of two of the four original dwellings into charming holiday cottages, designed to offer modern comforts while preserving the historic essence of the site.

The cottages are equipped with luxurious mattresses, quality bedding, and towels, as well as well-appointed kitchens and cozy sitting rooms, ensuring a comfortable stay for visitors. The restoration process has been carefully executed to maintain the original character of the dwellings without unnecessary embellishments, allowing guests to enjoy a genuine experience on this scenic headland. The remote location means there is no Wi-Fi and limited mobile phone reception, providing a perfect opportunity for guests to disconnect from the digital world and fully immerse themselves in relaxation. A landline is available for emergencies, adding a layer of convenience for visitors.

Stella, one of the holiday accommodations, features generous single-storey living with a comfortable sitting room, a separate dining area, and a modern, fully-equipped kitchen. It includes three bedrooms: one with a king-size bed, a twin room, and a single room. The family shower room is modern, featuring a walk-in shower, and there is an additional toilet with a wash basin. Outside, guests can enjoy a private, enclosed gravel garden, perfect for al-fresco dining on the provided stone furniture, enhancing the overall tranquil experience of the stay.

The location offers access to beautiful, safe beaches, many of which have received blue flag status, including Ogmore-by-Sea, Barry Island, Southerndown, and Porthcawl, which are ideal for windsurfing. Just a short drive away, Cowbridge provides a variety of shops, boutiques, art galleries, and excellent dining options. Additionally, the area is home to the Gower Peninsula, known for its stunning walking trails along the Mumbles. The lighthouse grounds are also recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the presence of the rare Tuberous Thistle, discovered in 1977, further enhancing the unique appeal of this coastal destination.
