Bull Point Lighthouse, located in Nr. Woolacombe, Devon, has been a beacon of safety since its construction in 1879. For 93 years, the lighthouse successfully guided vessels until ground movement in 1972 caused a significant cliff collapse, leading to the partial destruction of the engine and fog station. The current lighthouse, built using much of the original equipment, is now automated and monitored from Trinity House's Planning Centre in Harwich, Essex. While this change meant the end of the lighthouse keepers’ era, it allowed for the refurbishment of the four cottages on the property, transforming them into comfortable accommodations ideal for modern visitors seeking an authentic coastal experience.
The cottages have been thoughtfully restored to retain their original charm while incorporating contemporary comforts. Each cottage is equipped with luxurious mattresses, bedding, and towels, as well as well-appointed kitchens and cozy sitting areas. While the fog horn has been silenced since 1988, guests can enjoy the serene surroundings and take in views of fishing boats navigating the Bristol Channel. Notably, WiFi is now available, though it may be less reliable during storms, adding a touch of modernity to the historic setting.
Guests at Bull Point Lighthouse have easy access to the picturesque village of Mortehoe, which features charming pubs, restaurants, and local shops, all within walking distance. For those seeking a broader selection of amenities, the popular beach village of Woolacombe is just 1.2 miles away, reachable via the scenic South West Coast Path. Adventurous walkers can embark on a circular route from Woolacombe to Putsborough Sands, where stunning views and the possibility of spotting seals await. Additionally, the historic town of Ilfracombe, located under six miles away, offers a vibrant harbor, beautiful beaches, and the opportunity for boat trips to Lundy Island.
The Triton cottage, which accommodates up to four guests, features a sea-facing sitting room, a separate dining area, and a fully-equipped kitchen. It includes one king-size bedroom and two sea-facing single bedrooms, along with a modern bathroom that boasts both a bath and a separate shower. Outside, guests can relax on a garden bench or enjoy meals at picnic-style furniture in the shared courtyard. The four cottages at Bull Point Lighthouse offer a range of accommodations: Warden, the smallest for two guests and one dog; Triton, accommodating four guests and two dogs; Siren, a pet-free option for five guests; and Sherrin, the largest detached property that also sleeps five and welcomes two dogs, providing a variety of options for visitors to choose from.
