Located in Llanbister, near Llandrindod Wells in Powys, Wales, this enchanting holiday property offers a serene retreat for two guests, with the added benefit of allowing pets. Surrounded by stunning countryside, the accommodation is rich in history, having been converted from a Victorian-era grain store known as Great Cantal Granary. The property features an open-plan living space adorned with wooden beams, an electric woodburner, and a farmhouse-style kitchen equipped with a Rayburn for cooking and heating, along with an electric cooker. Essential amenities include a utility area, a bathroom with an over-bath shower, and a staircase leading to a cozy double bedroom that also accommodates an additional single bed for a third guest.
The Granary is steeped in historical significance, originally serving the adjacent Great Cantal Mill, which dates back to the 17th century and operated until the late 1940s. The mill was notable for its wooden overshot mill wheel, powered by the nearby River Aran. Farmers would bring their grain to the mill, where it was stored and processed, with the miller taking a portion of the flour as payment. Although most of the mill's machinery was removed by the 1980s, a significant bedstone from 1830 remains on display at Talgarth Mill, approximately 30 miles away. Since 1989, the Granary, Mill, and Farmhouse have been owned separately from the farm, which is now traversed by a network of tracks providing easy access to nearby commons.
The surrounding area boasts natural beauty and ecological significance, with Beacon Hill Common offering 5,000 acres of open moorland and Glyndwr's Way, a long-distance footpath. The River Aran, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a European Special Area of Conservation, is home to diverse wildlife and provides fishing rights for the owner along the River Ithon, located a short drive away. The nearby Maelienydd, also a protected site, is a breeding ground for various bird species, including redshank and curlew, while Beacon Hill is known for its rare ring ouzel and red grouse. Tylcau Hill, another nature reserve managed by the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, is just two miles from the Granary and welcomes visitors year-round.
Conveniently situated, the Granary is a short distance from local amenities, with the spa town of Llandrindod Wells located 15 miles away. Guests can find a shop eight miles from the property, while a pub and restaurant are only 4.5 miles away. The property features an enclosed front garden with outdoor furniture, a rear garden, and parking for two cars, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful getaway. With a welcome pack provided and the option for a travel cot and high chair upon request, the Granary ensures a comfortable stay while embracing its historical roots and the beauty of the Welsh countryside.
