The Old Town, with its half-timbered buildings and narrow passageways known as ’twittens’, offers restaurants, cafés and antique shops to browse. Visit the Shipwreck Museum and Blue Reef Aquarium, or see the iconic, black net huts and the caves deep in the West Hill, and discover Hastings’ smuggling past. In the other direction, don’t miss Battle Abbey, built by William the Conqueror as a penance, ordered by the Pope as a result of the battle fought between William Duke of Normandy and the Saxon King Harold, England’s would be rulers, on the 14th October 1066. Explore the golden sand dunes at Camber or the cobbled market town of Rye, featured in the television adaptation of E.F. Benson’s 1930s comedy drama, Mapp and Lucia.
