A short stroll brings you into the medieval Cinque Port town of Rye, with its cobbled streets, wide selection of restaurants, atmospheric beamed pubs (the one time haunt of many a smuggler), delightful tea rooms and, of course, fish and chip shops. Explore the many galleries, and you might even find a bargain at the brocante and antique shops. Don’t miss the view from the tower of St Mary’s Parish Church across what was once known as the smuggling capital of England some 300 years ago. Enjoy cycling (bikes for hire in Rye), wildlife at the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and Dungeness, and walking along the Royal Military Canal. Hastings, Battle and Camber Sands are all within a short drive. Beach 4 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 400 yards.
