Pack your walking boots and head to Bramble Cottage, a walkers’ and cyclists’ delight! This terraced cottage is located in the West Sussex village of Storrington, listed in the Domesday book. It lies at the foot of the north side of the South Downs and is a gateway to the South Downs National Park. It is, in fact, at the mid-point of the South Downs Way, a 100-mile long trail which runs from Winchester to Eastbourne. From Kithurst Hill, nearly 700ft above sea level, you can see across the English Channel and, on a clear day, you can see the Isle of Wight. Visit Arundel Castle, the home of the Dukes of Norfolk for over 1000 years, where the tulips and other flowers, such Lily of the Nile, are stunning in the carefully looked-after grounds. Visit the National Trust’s Petworth House, an impressive mansion surrounded by a 700-acre deer park landscaped by Capability Brown. See inside, and view the paintings of Petworth by JMW Turner. Visit Parham House with its gardens, Bignor Roman Villa or Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre. Dabble in some wine tasting at Nutbourne Vineyard or try your luck at the races at Goodwood. The coast at Worthing is 10 miles. Gatwick is about 25 minutes’ drive. Pulborough links you to London in 1¼ hours. Beach 9 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 50 yards.
