Bwthyn y Porthmon (translated as Drovers Cottage) is in the perfect place for discovering both the countryside and coast of Ceredigion. In a quiet location off the main street, it has cafés, shops and pubs, and the small market town of Lampeter is right on your doorstep. The cottage has been beautifully styled to offer spacious and very comfortable holiday accommodation for up to four people. The beamed open plan kitchen?/?dining room leads out to a little cottage garden, and the cosy living room has a feature beam above the fireplace. The cottage is completed upstairs with two bedrooms, one with en-suite facilities, and a bathroom.
Lampeter is a historic market and university town in the heart of the Teifi Valley, and was an important place for 18th-century drovers to gather their livestock and impound them overnight on the common, now a car park outside the cottage. In the 19th century the street in Harford Row was built by the Harford Estate as workmen’s cottages. The town is home to the University of Wales, Trinity St David (the oldest university in Wales) and is also officially recognised as the birth place of rugby in Wales. There are two Welsh quilt centres nearby. The town is a small and friendly place, with a thriving community and shopping comprising independent retailers and a fortnightly farmer’s market. The annual summer food festival draws crowds of people to sample the finest Welsh produce, and the popular agricultural show in August has been running continuously since the Victorian era.
Centred in the beautiful Welsh countryside, Lampeter is handy for Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire and the Brecon Beacons. But as there is so much to see and do in this part of west Wales, you probably won’t want to venture out of this amazing region. Less than 30 minutes’ drive will bring you to the coast, and you can visit the colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron, pretty New Quay or Aberystwyth with its pier, promenade and the steam train taking you to the falls at Devil’s Bridge. Picturesque Falcondale Lake is also within 2 miles and there is a golf course nearby. Only 15 minutes away you have the choice of two National Trust properties: you can try your hand at panning for gold at Dolaucothi Gold Mines and take an underground tour, or visit Llanerchaeron, an 18th-century estate with an early John Nash villa. Drive north from Lampeter to the historic market town of Tregaron with its weekly livestock market, and discover the Cors Caron National Nature Reserve, a vast area of wetland. Take the fully accessible boardwalk over the bog, passing the large observation building, where you can enjoy a peaceful view of the landscape and wildlife. You can also access a 4-mile section of the Ystwyth Trail, a national cycle trail. Drive on a bit further and visit the undiscovered wilderness of the Cambrian Mountains; one of the few remote areas left in southern Britain. There are only few roads across the mountains but they are acknowledged as some of the most scenic routes in Britain. Drovers Cottage awaits you, so come and enjoy a short break or a longer stay, and experience this distinctive Welsh region for yourself. Fishing can also be found nearby. Beach 13 miles.
