Anchor Cottage is situated in a unique location in Pittenweem, one of the prettiest fishing ports in the East Neuk of Fife. Accessed by stone stairs, the cottage originally formed part of the Crown and Anchor public house which was built in the early 1800s into part of the boundary wall of Pittenweem Priory, an Augustinian monastery, dating back to the 12th century, and built over a sacred cave associated with St Fillan. You can still visit St Fillan’s Cave with its holy well in Cove Wynd. Some time around the middle of the last century, the house was divided into three properties, one of which is now Anchor Cottage.
Anchor Cottage is a welcoming holiday cottage with a cosy open plan living area, perfect for relaxing after a day on the beach. The double bedroom on the second floor has a great view of the harbour.
The cottage is just a short walk away from the harbour side where you can watch the fishing boats unloading their catch and buy freshly caught fish and shell fish from a stall on the harbour.
Pittenweem is a quaint, historic village with lanes and wynds to explore, a local inn, ice cream shop, fish and chip shop, restaurants, chocolate shop and café, local baker’s shop and an interesting array of craft shops and galleries.
The village is a renowned centre for artists and craftsmen, who celebrate their skills during the popular Pittenweem Arts Festival every August.
This is also the perfect location to enjoy walking, and you can join the Fife Coastal Path which passes through the village and takes you along the coast with spectacular views over the Firth of Forth to picturesque fishing villages, award winning sandy beaches and coves. The nearby town of Anstruther is home to the Scottish Fisheries Museum and you can also take a boat trip to the Isle of May, a world-renowned bird sanctuary and nature reserve, famous for puffins and grey seals.
St Andrews is only 10 miles away, and makes a great day out with its historic sites, many cafés, bistros and restaurants, shops and of course its championship golf courses.
No matter how you spend your day you can be assured that Anchor Cottage offers you a welcome place to relax after your adventures. Beach 600 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 400 yards.
