One of a pair of beautifully situated rural holiday cottages, Ettrick Cottage is the perfect place for peace and relaxation, with comfortable, bright accommodation. This semi-detached cottage enjoys views towards the vast Forest of Ae and the Nithsdale Valley, home to red squirrels, deer and spectacular birds of prey. There are numerous walks nearby, especially up to lovely Loch Ettrick, 1½ miles along quiet roads, where fishing is also available (licence required). Stargazing in this designated Dark Skies area couldn’t be easier, or perhaps take a trip to the Dark Skies Observatory near Dalmellington, 43 miles. Dumfries, 15 miles, has a fascinating Art Trail, or visit Drumlanrig Castle and Gardens near Thornhill, 8 miles, where there are also great cycle trails. Mountain biking is available at nearby Ae, part of the 7 Stanes network. Try a walk at Cairnhead, 22 miles, to see the Striding Arches, an artist led project where red sandstone arches stride around the surrounding hills. There is golf at Thornhill and Dumfries, and plenty of good local shops and restaurants to try. Shop 2½ miles, pub and restaurant 5½ miles.
