Attached to the owner’s home which was once the original village vicarage dating back to the 1600s, Hen Bwthyn Ficerdy (Old Vicarage Cottage), offers comfortable holiday accommodation in the heart of North Wales. Renovated to a very good standard, this welcoming cottage with its cosy open fire and quiet village location, is an ideal base for couples who want to explore both sides of the border. The cottage is located in the village of Minera, which is famous for its lead mines dating back to the Roman times. The village has a community run pub, church and playground, which is just opposite the cottage and is ideal for dog walking. A wider range of amenities including shops, pubs and restaurants can be found in Wrexham, five miles.
Perfect for those who love the outdoors, there are lots of great walks in the area including the Minera mountain, the former rail tracks and through the old disused quarry which has been designated as an area of rare scientific interest, due to its rare species of flora and bird life. Offas Dyke and Clywedog trail are also nearby. Walk to National Trust’s Erddig, approximately seven miles, or over the mountain and through the vale between Wrexham and Llangollen, known as World’s End.
For the more adventurous, try a segway experience at Chirk Castle, 12 miles and the popular mountain biking centre at Llandegla, six miles, which offers cycle hire as well as a fishing lake and shooting centre. Other outdoor activities include the off-road driving centre at Bwlchgwyn, the Horseshoe Pass to Llangollen, which apart from its horse drawn barges and the Pontcysyllte aquaduct, which is a World Heritage Site, also offers canoeing and white water rafting, as well as hosting the annual International Eisteddfod in July.
Ruthin is just 14 miles away, with its castle and historical museum. The historic city of Chester is within a 20-minute drive and Bala, Chester Zoo and Blue Planet Aquarium are all within a 40-minute drive. Liverpool can be reached within an hour, or drive to Wallasey and take a ferry across the Mersey. Snowdonia and Betws-y-Coed with its Go Ape Treetop Adventure and the world’s longest zip wire are also within an hour’s drive. Beaches at Barmouth, Conwy and Llandudno are within easy driving distance.
