The Isle of Bute has been named as one of National Geographic’s top 10 global adventure trips. The island is unique in that it feels wild and remote yet is just 90 minutes from Glasgow and easily accessible. The Island with its stunning scenery has much to offer the visitor. Unmissable highlights include Mount Stuart house and gardens, a trip on the paddle steamer Waverley and the West Island Way walk. Historical sites include Mount Stuart House, Chapels of St Blane and Kilmichael, standing stones, ancient burial sites, vitrified fort and Rothesay Castle.

A car is not essential but offers most flexibility and facilitates sightseeing - there is plentiful free parking in the car park opposite the flat. Buses run regularly from one end of the island to the other on the east side of the island. In summer the open-top sight-seeing bus drives around the island every hour and it is possible to get off and on. The daily ticket for this bus is also valid on all local buses. Cycling is a great way to get about, there are no extremely steep hills and the island is a very manageable size. Electric bicycle hire is available from the Rothesay ferry port and Port Bannatyne.
