Holiday in a pet friendly quiet seaside village in the South West of Scotland, Garlieston

Dumfries and Galloway. Sleeps up to 4

Peck o Maut is a former manse in the lovely village of Garlieston. It is an ideal base for walking, cycling or sailing with quiet roads and big skies. It is a great area for dog walking, lots of beach and woodland.
The house is a two-up-two-down. It has a double bedroom, single bedroom where we have a single bed plus underbed which makes up into an additional single, and a shower room/toilet upstairs. The living room has a electric stove and the usual TV/DVD player. The kitchen has recently been refurbished and has all you would need for your stay. The fridge only has a small freezer compartment, so its best not to bring too much frozen stuff. Outside there is a gated side pathway leading to an enclosed good sized yard with patio set and steps up into a small garden, greenhouse and shed. Parking on the road is not a problem. The house has storage heaters throughout with a portable electric heater should the Scottish weather permit ! We can also supply a travel cot and high chair on request.

Let me tell you something of the area. The peninsular where Garlieston is is called The Machars. It is a quiet, relatively undiscovered area of Scotland and is ideal for walkers, cyclists, canoeists, or people who just like to jump in the car and have a drive. There are lots of little villages in the area to explore. Garlieston is a quiet village with a great local pub. There is a thriving bowls club on the front. The sea is two minutes walk from the house and some local fishing boats use the harbour. There are great local walks and bike rides. The nearest town is Wigtown (10 mins drive away) - Scotland's Book Town - and there are often literary weekends here. They are great fun, especially the big festival in September. Go on their website to check.
Newton Stewart is about 20/25 mins away, Dumfries about 90 mins, and Stranraer about 60 mins away. The ferries to Belfast go from near Stranraer (Cairnryan) and we can really recommend a visit to the Titanic exhibition in Belfast. The crossing is only just about 90 mins, is frequent and very good value!
The Galloway Forest Park is great expanse of managed forest and has the area's highest 'hill' - The Merrick. The Otter Pool, Raiders Road, Cairnsmore and many more places can be explored. For the children there is The Cocoa Bean (chocolate factory and play area); Cream of Galloway (ice cream maker and pay area); for the 'child in us' is Laggan Activity (the country's longest zip and only human catapult as well as clay pigeon shooting and lots more); and Long Ken where there is every type of water sport you can think of. These are all within an hour's drive of Garlieston.
This is the first time we have put Peck o Maut as a holiday home so, as well as furnishing the house completely from scratch, we are very new to holiday letting. A bit scary but hopefully good fun. Only you can tell us! We have a 'thing' about families having to pay more for school holiday times - WE WONT CHARGE MORE - we are grandparents and value the time the whole family can holiday together. Also, we have deliberately not put in wifi, as feedback from parents seems to indicate that they prefer it not being a distraction. If anyone needs to go on-line, the Harbour Inn is a great place for it - and the beer is good too!.

Although blocked off on the calendar, the house may be available for longer winter lets. As from December 2019 we are available for a Christmas/New Year let at a negotiable seasonal rate. Please contact me by e-mail to discuss or look on the site.

Located in Newton Stewart, this vacation home is in a rural area and by the sea. Swallow Theatre and Stewartry Museum are cultural highlights, and some of the area's attractions include Laggan Outdoor and Cally Gardens. Discover the area's water adventures with scuba diving and rafting nearby, or enjoy the great outdoors with mountain climbing and horse riding.
