The Rock is located in the picturesque Forest of Dean, on the edge of the Wye Valley, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a short forest walk from one of the finest viewpoints in southern England at Symonds Yat Rock. The River Wye meanders far below with spectacular far reaching views which has made it a very popular tourist destination since Victorian times. The forest was the royal hunting grounds of the Tudor kings and The Rock Inn, as it was formerly known, has its origin around that time. The Rock has not been a public house for many years but the two studios were built in what was the old skittle alley, and Forest Cottage is built on what was the site of the original stables for the old inn.
As this is a popular area for walking, guides and maps are provided to help you make the most of your stay. Cycling and mountain biking are also popular in the forest and bike storage is available. The area also provides plenty of opportunities for bird and wildlife watching, canoeing, climbing and even caving. Sheep are allowed to roam free within the statutory forest area and it is not unusual to see fallow and muntjac deer. Symonds Yat is home to peregrine falcon and goshawks are one of the more unusual birds to spot in the forest.
The Rock has a large private car park (from its heritage as a pub). The two studios and the cottage all have private patios leading to their own entrance so you are free to come and go as you please. All have views over the garden across open farmland to the Ruardean Valley stretching 25 miles to the Malvern Hills.
Forest Cottage is semi-detached, next to the owner’s home with a contemporary styled, open plan living/dining/kitchen area on the ground floor and a large upstairs bedroom with a kingsize bed and and separate shower room. This cottage is dog friendly and dogs can be exercised in the forest.
Ruardean Studio and Clearwell Studio are both ground floor, contemporary styled, open plan studios which enjoy fantastic views across the garden and open farmland. There is outdoor seating in which to enjoy a glass of wine and your favourite meals. These studios are pet free for those who may suffer with allergies.
Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant ¾ mile.
Forest Cottage (ref UKC3032) can be booked together with Ruardean Studio (ref UKC3033) and Clearwell Studio (ref UKC3034) to accommodate up to 6 guests.
