The cottage faces due west and offers incredible views over the Vale of Monmouth, glimpses of the Wye and the Monnow with a backdrop of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons. The Forest of Dean is in one direction, the Wye Valley and Symonds Yat in the other and the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons National Park are in easy reach in another. The cottage is a perfect base for walking, cycling (mountain biking is popular in the area) and for river activities.
Monmouth, the birth place of Henry V (of Agincourt fame) and the seat of the Rolls family is just 2 miles away. Monmouth is an unspoiled medieval market town and offers restaurants, shops, pubs, river walks and the famous Monnow Bridge with its surviving medieval gated tower. There are two museums, one devoted to original Nelson memorabilia, the other in the Castle and Monmouthshire Regiment Museum. The town hosts a free music festival in July/August each year, a river festival and various agricultural and other shows. The famous Rockfield studios are just outside the town, on the way to the historic Rolls of Monmouth golf course.
Places to visit within 10 miles include the beautiful and romantic ruin of Tintern Abbey, the Norman castles at White Castle, Skenfrith and Grosmont as well as Raglan Castle, which dates back to the 1430s and Goodrich Castle near Symonds Yat. Abergavenny, with its own castle is another pretty market town, 17 miles from Monmouth, which hosts a world famous annual food festival in September. Whether you crave history and culture, outdoor activities or simply doing nothing in beautiful surroundings, Woodside Cottage is an ideal spot. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 2 miles.
