Sitting in the grounds of the Lowther Castle Estate, just within the Lake District National Park, 16 Lowther Village is found in a former estate workers ‘village’ of pretty sandstone cottages. Built in the 1770s, this terraced cottage is Grade II* listed and set in lawned courtyards designed by the renowned architect Robert Adam for the 1st Earl of Lonsdale. Occupying a prominent position in the village, this two-storey cottage has been sympathetically restored using traditional techniques and materials together with environmentally friendly and sustainable energy sources. The dual aspect living room with solid oak floor benefits from a wood burning stove and has been stylishly furnished with a contemporary feel. With a well-stocked library, numerous board games and even a Wii - there’s something for everyone! Outside, the enclosed patio is a fantastic sun trap, perfect for relaxing in after an exhilarating day walking in the fells. Upstairs the bedrooms reflect the contemporary décor and are stylishly furnished to a minimalist taste, and beds are dressed with luxurious 600 thread count linen. A larger than average landing provides the perfect space for children (or adults!) to relax on the sofa and play on the Xbox.
Stunning Lowther Castle sits in extensive gardens, and its grounds run down to the River Lowther. Just a short walk from the cottage, it is an increasingly popular visitor attraction in itself, with the Lowther Estate offering guests of all ages a wealth of experiences. Families of younger children will particularly enjoy the Hidden Garden. The estate offers events throughout the year, with the Lowther Show held every August, a family orientated traditional country fair, and Kendal Calling, an annual music festival held every July with hundreds of bands entertaining many thousands of music lovers.
Head through the Lowther Estate, either by car or on foot, through the glorious grounds to the nearby village of Askham, with Pooley Bridge just a short drive away, just one of the popular villages dotted on the edges of Lake Ullswater. Lowther is ideally placed for the market towns of Keswick and Penrith, and a perfect base for enjoying the delights of the northern Lakes. Alternatively, the beautiful Eden Valley is on the doorstep for walks, fabulous scenery and villages offering Cumbrian hospitality at its finest, with traditional pubs, village bakeries and coffee shops offering home bakes to enjoy. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant ½ mile.
