Monmouthshire has been a contested borderland over the centuries and has more castles per square mile than anywhere else in the UK. Nestled between the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the stunning landscape will take your breath away. The attractive town of Monmouth has been a draw for tourists since the late 1800’s, and its iconic 13th-century gatehouse bridge is much photographed. The town has many independent shops and restaurants to suit all tastes. Stroll around and stop to enjoy a coffee in a quiet courtyard café. There are regular events throughout the year; the Monmouth Festival is one of Europe’s largest free music festivals and the Monmouthshire Show is the largest one day show in Wales.
Check out the museums in Abergavenny, Monmouth or Chepstow to hear the stories of these towns or visit picturesque Usk, a town with many strings to its bow. It sits on one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in the country, the River Usk, and its 11th-century castle is the backdrop for an enchanting, romantic garden. It hosts a colourful Open Gardens weekend in June and a county show in September, and has a rural life museum, and a Town Trail. Visit Wales’ capital, Cardiff, an easy 45-minute drive, which offers a startling range of unique attractions, top class entertainment and quality shopping. Fans of the cult show will enjoy a visit to the Dr Who Experience!
If you love the great outdoors, the county has more than 1,000 miles of public footpaths to walk. Try your hand at kayaking down the River Wye, or playing a round of golf, there’s no shortage of activities for you to try. Have a go at paddle boarding, one of the fastest-growing sports to hit the UK, or for the more adventurous, experience the thrill of soaring on thermal currents on a tandem paragliding flight off the Blorenge; the prominent hill overlooking the Usk Valley. Whatever your interests, ensure you make time to enjoy High Knowle and relax in sophistication. Shop and restaurant 600 yards, pub 200 yards.
