. This delightful, character 17th-century cottage is located next to the square in the picturesque village of Westbourne, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, and Chalk Cottage is one of 66 cottages mentioned in it. This lovely, quaint village has a shop and post office, a selection of pubs with dining, and a historic church, all a few yards away. Dating back to the Georgian period, this deceptively spacious home would have been the coach house which allowed the carriages to access the former Lamb Hotel. The bedroom and bathroom on the first floor would have formed an arch for the horse and carts to proceed underneath – the ground floor has since been built, in more recent years, to provide the current living/dining room and kitchen. Steeped in history, Chalk Cottage boasts features such as sash windows and exposed wooden beams in the bedroom. The living/dining room has alcoves and there is a fire surround housing an electric woodburner. A door leads from the kitchen to an enclosed, secluded courtyard, ideal for enjoying an aperitif or al fresco dining.
There is so much to do in the area, with excellent walking, hiking and birdwatching in the South Downs National Park. The market town of Emsworth is only a 10-minute drive, with a train station, a host of cafés, pubs and restaurants, as well as a mill pond and estuary where many birds and other wildlife can be seen, and where scenic waterside walks can be enjoyed. Many attractions and National Trust homes are within easy reach, as well as Chichester with its cathedral, leisure facilities, Goodwood and Fontwell races. Also, historic Portsmouth with designer shopping outlets, historic dockyard, ferries to the Isle of Wight, Spinnaker Tower and more. Beaches including Emsworth and West Wittering are also nearby. Slightly further, visit The New Forest to the west and Arundel Castle to the east. Golf, riding, sailing walking, cycling can all be enjoyed nearby. Hot air balloon flights can be arranged with the owner. Shop, pub and restaurant 220 yards. More details, photos & booking info
